Monday Jun 19, 2017
Main Point: No one has done more to make things better for women, children and families, than Jesus
Take away: Jesus will make things better for any family committed to listening to and following his ways.
Suggested Memory Verse: “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15b
-
Discussion Questions
- Have you ever read Matthew 12:46-50 or Luke 14:25-26 and been puzzled by what Jesus was saying? How do you understand these verses now?
- Jesus’ teaching and example made things better for women and children, but we are still learning how to live those out. What are some issues facing “people groups” in our society today (including women, children, immigrants, the elderly, the poor, etc.)? Which ones are of particular interest to you? How does Jesus speak into those and what are some Christian responses we might make to address them?
- What are some places where you see Christian influence on the family? Based on your knowledge of Jesus’ teachings, do you think families would be better off or worse off for following Jesus? (I know the answer to that is assumed, but why do you think what you think? Would the family be better off if there were no religion, or no focus on God?)
Table Discussion Question – What do you like best about your family? What is Jesus’ influence on your family like?

Suggested Memory Verse: Mark 8:34 - Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
-
Discussion Questions
- How do you (or how would you) feel when you are part of a team and a member of the team wants to do their own thing, rather than what is best for the team? What do you want to say to them?
- Can you think of a time when you wanted something to go one way, but God clearly meant for it to go a different way? How easy, or how difficult was it for you to accept God’s way?
- Think of some examples of what it means to “deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow Jesus.” What do you think Jesus meant by “losing your life” in order to save it? Why is it important that he says we need to be willing to lose our lives “for him and for the gospel”?
Table Discussion Question – Jesus says that it’s possible to get everything we might want and lose our self (our soul) in the process. What do you think he means by “lose your self”?

- Which fear response is most natural for you: to run, hide or fight back? How are you learning to run to Jesus, be covered by Jesus, or invite Jesus to fight your battles?
